Deck & Fence Staining in St. Thomas, Ontario

Decks in St. Thomas take a beating — strong summer sun, Lake Erie humidity, and freeze-thaw cycles that lift coatings and crack boards. A proper stain job is not just cosmetic: it seals the wood against moisture and extends the life of the deck by years. We wash, sand, repair and stain pressure-treated and cedar decks and fences across St. Thomas and Elgin County, with a written scope before any work begins.

What's included in every deck staining project

Pressure washing to remove greyed fibres, mildew and old flaking finish. Sanding of walking surfaces and handrails for an even, splinter-free finish. Minor board and fastener repairs — protruding screws reset, split boards flagged.

Premium exterior stain in transparent, semi-transparent or solid finishes, with rails, spindles, stairs and lattice stained to match.

Our process

1. Assessment: we check wood condition, moisture content and the existing finish. 2. Preparation: wash, sand and repair — most of the labour, and what determines how long the finish lasts.

3. Staining: two-coat application on walking surfaces where the wood will take it. 4. Walkthrough: you inspect the finished deck before we leave.

Pressure-treated vs. cedar

Pressure-treated decks, common in newer St. Thomas subdivisions, need a full curing season before their first stain and take semi-transparent stain well.

Cedar decks, common on older and custom builds, need gentler washing and often a brightener before staining. We match the prep and product to the wood.

Local considerations

Staining season in Elgin County runs roughly May through September — stain needs dry wood and daytime temperatures above 10°C.

South and west-facing decks age fastest and typically need restaining every 2–3 years; shaded north-facing decks can go 3–4. Near Lake Erie we use mould-resistant stain formulations.

Siding, trim and doors are covered on our exterior painting page, and you can request a free quote for a deck, a fence, or both together.
